Polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common hormonal disorder of women in reproductive age.

Women may experience infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods and/or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. These elevated levels of androgens may result in excess of facial and body hair (hirsutism), and occasionally severe acne and male-pattern baldness. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles), being this checked in a pelvic ultrasound. These small follicles frequently fail to release eggs (no ovulation occurs). This is the reason why women may have difficulty in getting pregnant.

The exact cause of PCOS is unknown. Early diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term complications such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS may also need medical treatment to achieve a pregnancy.

Discuss with your Doctor which are your treatment options depending on your complaints and if you want to get pregnant.
